We Had a Visitor!

Justin and I went into Maryn's room at 6:45 to see if she was still sleeping. As soon as I walked in the door her eyes flew open. I said "Maryn! We had a visitor!" Well that's all it took, she jumped out of bed and was ready to take off down the stairs! We had to make her wait while we got Brynnie up. This is them waiting at the top of the stairs, anxious for Mom to get out of the way so they could see what Santa brought!
This is Brynna with her present from Santa, she was so excited! Maryn had seen a Pucci Pup, which is a stuffed dog that comes with a carrier, brush, leash, outfit and all that fun jazz at Costco back in October. When we went back to see if it was there, they were totally out. Maryn was bummed, so I told her that since Mommy couldn't get it, she better ask Santa for it. So since October, if you asked Maryn what she wanted Santa to bring, it was 'that dog from Costco'! So needless to say her and Brynna were both very excited that Santa delivered! Maryn named her white dog 'Emma' and Brynnie named her black dog 'Pepper'.
This is Maryn digging into her stocking. 'Little Einstein' dvd's, candy, play-dough and Hello Kitty stuff is always such a big hit at our house! How did Santa know?! As Maryn says "Mom, I guess he just knows!" She also loved that he puts oranges and apples in the stockings too, "Just like when you were little, Mom!"
This is Brynna and Daddy opening the first gift! Books, books, and more books from Mom and Dad! There are three things my kids love more than anything else...
#1 - Books This fun Disney Princess Book is from Nana and Papa! Both the girls are crazy about it! Then Brynnie is getting ready to open her 'Busy Book' from Nana and Papa as well. This also was a huge hit, it has all sorts of quiet activities that both the girls went gaga over. I can't wait to try it out in Sacrament Meeting this Sunday. Since both of my sweet daughters think it's time to dance Swan Lake while the congregation is singing the hymns. Ahem, maybe this will help me keep them in their seats!
#2 - Animals (ESPECIALLY Littlest Pet Shop for Maryn! That girl is obsessed!) Thank you Grammy and Gramps, these kidlets scored the motherload!
#3 - Anything that is really noisy and requires jumping all over the place. So this game we think ought to do the trick! I know my brother Steve and his wife Kristine LOVE noisy toys, so I got one for my nephews too. Haha, sorry Sis!
It was also sweet brecause this was the first year Maryn made and wrapped a present for her old Mom and Dad, with the help of her sweet teacher. A reindeer potholder that she painted! She was so proud and we loved it!
We all were really spoiled by Justin's and my parents, they are always so good to us. We missed them though. While we had a great, low-key, little Christmas just us and the kids, it made us realize there is something so special about having a house just brimming with those you love. I realized how strange it was a few days ago. This year was the first year in my whole married life that I had to peruse the Meat Department to look for a big animal to cook on a Holiday! I have been so spoiled having either my Mom or Jody in charge of that! I was always able to show up with a couple side dishes and call it good! This cooking all day thing for two straight days! Aye-yi-yi, I think I need a nap! Overall though it was a wonderful Christmas and we are so grateful for the blessings we enjoy. We are already looking forward to next Christmas in Oregon, so we can put that new luggage Nana and Papa sent to good use!

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

Yesterday morning when the girls woke up and I told them that it was FINALLY Christmas Eve day they just squealed with delight. Maryn had been religiously tracking the days until Christmas. She and Brynna were very excited for Santa to finally come visit their house! Before we started our Christmas Eve traditions, we decorated some reindeer cookies for Santa to munch when he finally made his way down our chimney!
Brynna was just doing a little quality control to make sure they were good enough for ol' St. Nick.
C'mon, it's not a family affair until Coco the Monkey is right in the middle of it all.Brynna and Coco are getting that tired lean! Hooray, because Mom has been feeling this way for hours. Let's get this party started and get these kids to bed!
It is a McLean family tradition to eat tapioca pudding on Christmas Eve while we watch or read the story of Christ's birth. If you want to know why we eat tapioca pudding, you're going to have to ask my parents. I think it has to do with the Christmas carol "Oh bring us some figgy pudding..." But really, who eats figgy pudding anymore? So we do tapioca, all I know is it's not Christmas Eve without it!
This is the girls watching their Living Scriptures movie about Christ's birth. Maryn has unusual taste in what she thinks is funny. Anytime a bad guy comes on the screen in her scripture videos, she laughs because for some reason she thinks they're hilarious. So this is her laughing at wicked King Herod. I have tried telling her that these are bad guys and that they're not funny, but she insists that it is. Maybe it's their angry faces? Add it to the list of things I would love to understand that goes on in that girl's brain! (If you ask my mother, Maryn's personality is pure payback for mine as a child!) On a similar note, earlier in the evening we were watching "A Charlie Brown Christmas" which is a Young family tradition on Christmas Eve. Of all the wonderful things one could take away from that show, Brynna's favorite line is when Lucy threatens Snoopy by saying "I outta slug you!". That just sends her into fits of giggles and she repeats it over and over in her gruff little Brynnie voice. I think she loves it so much because she knows it's naughty. She also learned the word 'stupid' from the video, when the kids are being mean to Charlie Brown. She showcased her new vocabulary in the Hallmark store the other day saying she didn't want to look at anymore "stupid angel ornaments" while the clerk was close by listening. Ahh, proud moments... what can I say, these girls of mine, they are definitely one in a million! Anyhoot, on with Christmas Eve....
After we were done with the movie and our pudding, we made sure that our stockings were hung with care and put Santa's cookies out for him. We couldn't forget a couple of carrots for the reindeer, after all they work really hard too!
Then before sending the girls off to bed, we knelt down and said our family prayers thanking Heavenly Father for the true reason for the Season. It is so humbling to know that every blessing we have and every good thing that has come into our lives is because of that tiny baby, born under those humble circumstances so many years ago. We love Him so very much and at this time especially, we rejoice in His miraculous birth.

Ice Skating

With Justin having to be gone so much this month, I was wanting to take full advantage of any time we had with him before he had to head out of town again, even if he was sick, darn it! So Monday night I thought it would be fun to take the girls ice skating for the first time. Justin seemed excited about the idea, so it surprised me when we pulled into the ice rink parking lot and he said "Have I ever mentioned that I hate ice skating?" Ummm, that information would have been helpful BEFORE we got there! But he sucked it up and took one for the team and strapped on his skates. It took one time around the rink with two wobbly, clingy little girls for him to decide he was a better spectator than a skater. So we took turns with the kids, he sat and watched with one girl while I took the other one around. It was a challenge for Maryn and Brynna, but as Maryn always likes to say "Practice makes progress!". At the end of the session, I thought they actually did pretty well for it being their first time! And most importantly they both said they had a good time.

After skating, we worked up an appetite, so we took the kids out for pizza. It was funny because Justin and I were shoveling pizza and salad like there's no tomorrow because we were famished. But all the girls wanted to do was watch the t.v. in the restaraunt because "Sponge Bob Square Pants" was on. Kids at school must have told Maryn about it, because she talks about Sponge Bob, but I've never actually let her watch it, because well, I pretty much think it's just stupid. But they were taking full advantage of the fact that I was not in control of the remote and were soaking it in while they could! By the time we actually got them to focus long enough to finish their dinner, it was dark outside. So we decided to head down to Life University to see all the lights they put up every year. It was a lot of fun and got us all in the Christmas spirit! Just think, next week at this time, it will all be over with! Weird, huh?

Our Gingerbread House!

Every year, it is Phil and Jody's tradition to get together with the girls and make a fun Gingerbread House. This year's actually turned out pretty good! We've had some questionable Gingerbread Houses in the past, but this one was a keeper! (Nice icicle work Phil!)
Of course the girls loved it and there was no shortage of licking frosting off their fingers and sneaking candy.
Brynna was especially proud of her contributions! She threw her arms up after putting some candy on the house and and triumphantly said "Yay, I did it!" Jody was marveling at how much she had grown in the past year. She really is such a big kid now!
Maryn also just continues to amaze us with how she's grown in the last year. This was serious business to her and she was concentrating so she could do it just right! (The band-aid on her head is to cover up the stitches we had to go get on Friday night. You'd think with all the trips to Urgent Care, I'd given birth to a couple of Mexican wrestlers or something! Oh well, the excitement never ends!)
Justin's brothers, Aaron and Adam, didn't want to miss out on a good time! So they came up with Phil and Jody to have some Christmas fun with us. Justin and Adam were not exactly the life of the party for awhile there....
In Justin's defense, the poor guy was totally sick, so we'll forgive him. It was later determined that Adam was storing up on brain power, so that later on he and Jody could beat the pants off the rest of us at Scrabble! So to keep the party going while the beauties were sleeping, Aaron got a jam session going in the kitchen to a little Jack Johnson with Maryn and Brynna. Yeah, it's not Christmas music, but in our family, you can never go wrong with a little bit of Jack!
Since Phil, Jody, Adam, and Aaron will all be in Arizona with Justin's sister, Kristen for Christmas, we decided to go ahead and let the girls open a couple of their presents from them now. They were out of their minds with happiness!
They got cozy robes from Grammy and Gramps and a cool storybook theater kit from Adam and Aaron. Both of which we could not pry from their fingers even after they slept off the excitment this morning! Thanks for such a good time you guys, we love you!

And a Child Shall Teach Them...

My Aunt Jody sent this story to me and I just loved it. I found tears streaming down my cheeks as I read it. Hope you enjoy it too...

A Baby's Hug ~

We were the only family with children in the restaurant. I sat Erik in a high chair and noticed everyone was quietly sitting and talking. Suddenly, Erik squealed with glee and said, 'Hi.' He pounded his fat baby hands on the high chair tray. His eyes were crinkled in laughter and his mouth was bared in a toothless grin, as he wriggled and giggled with merriment. I looked around and saw the source of his merriment. It was a man whose pants were baggy with a zipper at half-mast and his toes poked out of would-be shoes. His shirt was dirty and his hair was uncombed and unwashed. His whiskers were too short to be called a beard and his nose was so varicose it looked like a road map.

We were too far from him to smell, but I was sure he smelled. His hands waved and flapped on loose wrists. 'Hi there, baby; hi there, big boy. I see ya, buster,' the man said to Erik. My husband and I exchanged looks, 'What do we do?' Erik continued to laugh and answer, 'Hi.' Everyone in the restaurant noticed and looked at us and then at the man. The old geezer was creating a nuisance with my beautiful baby. Our meal came and the man began shouting from across the room, 'Do ya patty cake? Do you know peek-a-boo? Hey, look, he knows peek- a-boo.' Nobody thought the old man was cute. He was obviously drunk. My husband and I were embarrassed. We ate in silence; all except for Erik, who was running through his repertoire for the admiring skid-row bum, who in turn, reciprocated with his cute comments.

We finally got through the meal and headed for the door. My husband went to pay the check and told me to meet him in the parking lot. The old man sat poised between me and the door. 'Lord, just let me out of here before he speaks to me or Erik,' I prayed. As I drew closer to the man, I turned my back trying to sidestep him and avoid any air he might be breathing. As I did, Erik leaned over my arm, reaching with both arms in a baby's 'pick-me-up' position. Before I could stop him, Erik had propelled himself from my arms to the man.

Suddenly a very old smelly man and a very young baby consummated their love and kinship. Erik in an act of total trust, love, and submission laid his tiny head upon the man's ragged shoulder. The man's eyes closed, and I saw tears hover beneath his lashes. His aged hands full of grime, pain, and hard labor, cradled my baby's bottom and stroked his back. No two beings have ever loved so deeply for so short a time. I stood awestruck. The old man rocked and cradled Erik in his arms and his eyes opened and set squarely on mine. He said in a firm commanding voice, 'You take care of this baby.'

Somehow I managed, 'I will,' from a throat that contained a stone. He pried Erik from his chest, lovingly and longingly, as though he were in pain. I received my baby, and the man said, 'God bless you, ma'am, you've given me my Christmas gift.' I said nothing more than a muttered thanks. With Erik in my arms, I ran for the car. My husband was wondering why I was crying and holding Erik so tightly, and why I was saying, 'My God, my God, forgive me.' I had just witnessed Christ's love shown through the innocence of a tiny child who saw no sin, who made no judgment; a child who saw a soul, and a mother who saw a suit of clothes. I was a Christian who was blind, holding a child who was not. I felt it was God asking, 'Are you willing to share your son for a moment?' when He shared His for all eternity. The ragged old man, unwittingly, had reminded me, 'To enter the Kingdom of God , we must become as little children.'

If this has blessed you, please bless others by sending it on. Sometimes, it takes a child to remind us of what is really important. We must always remember who we are, where we came from and, most importantly, how we feel about others. The clothes on your back or the car that you drive or the house that you live in does not define you at all; it is how you treat your fellow man that identifies who you are.

Christmas Cartoons

This is my all-time favorite photo of the Grinch! It makes me laugh every time I see it!
Well it's obviously been a few weeks since I updated the ol' blog. The couch has been all I've been able to focus on for about the last month, for the most part. This pregnancy has been by far the rottenest yet. I went to the doctor this morning and discovered I have actually lost 3 lbs. because I've just been so nauseous and sick. Ironically, Justin is in the middle of one of his busiest months work-wise and has had to be gone a lot. So, the poor kids have been held hostage in their house by their sick Momma! They have been very sweet for the most part though and are taking good care of me! The girls and I have been watching A LOT of Christmas cartoons together, trying to get into the spirit of the season with our 75 degree weather here in Georgia! They love all the old cartoons I used to watch when I was little and since it allows me to just lay down, I love it too! Their favorites are Frosty the Snowman, Charlie Brown's Christmas and one of my personal favorites, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! I swear my brothers and I had every line of that movie memorized as kids and even still to this day I can repeat almost the whole thing! It's pretty funny! We have managed to squeeze in a few fun things like jumping in the leaves at Grammy and Gramps and going to the park with my friend Laura and her boys. Justin, Maryn, and I made Christmas goodies together one night and Maryn and I also built a Gingerbread House together at her school this morning. So we have had some fun lately, I just haven't caught any of it with the camera! I'm looking forward to hopefully getting my energy back in the next couple of weeks though, so we can start taking some pictures for this sad ol' blog and making some more fun family memories!
